Gransden Lodge - Potton - St Neots - Gransden Lodge
Difficulty | medium |
---|---|
Minimum set-off height | 3,000 ft |
Distance | 30.5 km |
Airspace | Stay below 5,200 ft QFE south of Gransden. Avoid the Little Gransden Glider Exclusion Zone. |
BGA Ladder Points | 218 |
Suitable weather conditions | winds from the south-west, good thermals, cloud base at least 3,500 ft |
This task is a simple triangle. Do the task when winds are from the south-west so you are blown back towards the airfield. You can do the task in either direction, but it would be best to do the most into-wind leg first, as you can reduce the task to an out and return if you have difficulties. Note that the minimum height at STN and POT is 2,800 ft and you must remain above this height along the whole of this leg of the task, so you will want the cloud base to be over 3,500 ft before attempting this task.
Directions
If going to Potton then St Neots
Head south-west avoiding the glider exclusion zone around Little Gransden. Potton mast is easy to spot, the villages of Gamlingay and Potton are also easy to spot and on track.
At Potton turn north, St Neots is easy to spot at the first town to the north. You will pass the disused airfield of Tempsford on your left side.
From St Neots, the airfield is not easily spotted. If you can see the red brick houses of Cambourne, head toward them. Otherwise head east, passing to the north of the golf course and Abbotsley. Great Gransden and the airfield should be easily visible from there.
