The committee is elected each year at the AGM, usually in May. Potential candidates should express interest in advance to the member currently holding the role in order to learn more about it.

Committee Roles
Ordered by estimated workload.

; President
: Ensures the smooth running of the club, chairs club meetings and represents CUGC at Cambridge Gliding Centre (Gransden) meetings and at other gliding organisations. Is responsible for ensuring that other committee members are doing their jobs, and for completing any random tasks that may come up.

; Secretary
: Manages club membership. Works closely with the president and treasurer. Responsible for ticketing for trial flight events.

; Flying Coordinator
: Responsible for organising instructors and booking aircraft for trial flights and winter flying days. Works closely with president and secretary.

; Treasurer
: Manages CUGC's accounts and grant applications.

; Equipment Officer
: Ensures that our glider (CU) and its associated equipment are properly maintained, along with the relevant documentation. Great if you want to learn more about what goes into owning and maintaining a glider. Responsible for organising annual maintenance.

; Captain
: Responsible organising expeditions and competitions (including the Varsity match). Must have Bronze badge or above.

; Webmaster
: Manages the website, wiki and club email addresses. Requires a reasonable level of technical competency.

; Vice President
: Supports the president on special tasks. Helps organise trial flights. Can attend CGC committee meetings on the presidents behalf.

; Social Secretary
: Organises social events such as formals, pub meets and the annual dinner. Partly responsible for keeping Facebook page updated. A good role for someone who is unable to commit much time, but a really important role to be filled!

; Welfare Officer
: Looks out for members' welfare.

; Safety Officer
: A sports club mandated role. Liaises with the CGC safety officer. A small role.

; Assistant Treasurer
: Supports the treasurer.

; Ordinary Member
: Perfect if you want to be involved with major decisions and help out when you can. This is a zero commitment role as we appreciate some people want to help but can’t commit to anything.

In the midst of a global pandemic, CUGC took to North York Moors from March 13th to 20th, isolating themselves at Sutton Bank gliding club. (Disclaimer: the organisers did their due diligence in monitoring the developing Covid-19 situation and adjusted plans accordingly.)

The party consisted of Rob, Chris, Charlie, Jamie, Gil, Timo, Yizhen and Eszter with Andrew instructing. The weather was everything we could have hoped for and more, with ridge or thermal on four days, wave on one day and one afternoon with ideal training conditions.

Chris, Charlie and Rob arrived late on Friday 13th to explore the site and brave the rapidly-emptying supermarkets. Saturday then became a day of rigging, site briefings and walking the ridge line after thick cloud engulfed the hilltop in the morning.

Flying began on Sunday with the best ridge soaring day of the week. Everyone tasted what ridge flying is all about: strong lift, low flying and freezing toes!

Monday's soaring was a hat-trick with ridge, thermal and wave soaring each being enjoyed at different times during the day. Andrew and Jamie snuck in an evening flight just as the wave set up. This elevated them to more than 9000ft above Thirsk! Congratulations to Jamie for becoming the highest CUGC member in a few years.

With weak ridge and weak thermals, Tuesday presented some challenging but rewarding conditions. This involved skirting around cliff faces barely above ridge height on a few two-seater flights. Timo showed everyone how to inch every last bit of altitude out of the ridge: I only saw the bottom of CU during my flight!

The weather forecast for Wednesday showed rain all day so a couple CUGC members may have consumed slightly too much port on Tuesday... In spite of the forecast, the hangar was unpacked by 10:30am and the rain passed during lunch. This left a quiet, still afternoon in its wake which was ideal for finessing take-offs, circuits and landings. Chris kept CU for over an hour, getting back at Timo for staying up in the ASW-19 for so long on Tuesday...

Thursday, the last flying day, became the first sign of summer. We saw over 4000ft cloudbases and logged some remarkable thermic flights over the rugged Yorkshire terrain.

To say that we had an enjoyable, exciting and educational week would certainly be an understatement. Every one of us finished the week a better pilot than we started. We massively appreciate the support of everyone who made it possible. Special thanks go out to to Andrew for instructing us this week and towing the CGC K21 we used, to everyone we flew with at Yorkshire Gliding Club and to the very patient ladies in their office.

We will certainly be back at Sutton Bank once this pandemic subsides and flying resumes. Stay healthy everyone!
Special thanks go out to the office and everyone we flew with at Yorkshire Gliding Club and to Andrew for instructing us this week.

We will certainly be back at Sutton Bank once this pandemic subsides and flying resumes. Stay healthy everyone!

Thursday, the last flying day, became the first sign of summer. We saw over 4000ft cloudbases and logged some remarkable thermic flights over the rugged Yorkshire terrain.

The club regularly goes on expeditions around the country to experience different flying conditions. Many sites we go to have large ridges that give consistent lift for the whole of our stay. We usually go for a week about 3 times a year, taking our own single seater and an instructor with us.

Expeditions are open to members of all levels including complete beginners.

Format
We usually travel to another club together in a group of 5–10 students plus instructors, and stay on or near the airfield depending on whether they have accommodation.

While at the airfield we get as much flying as possible, both instructed flying and solo flying are available. Many people find the intensity of flying on an expedition allows them to progress much faster than they normally would.

Depending on the airfield we either cook for ourselves or eat at the canteen.
Expeditions are run three times per year, in the Michaelmas, Lent and Summer holidays. Specific dates are announced before the expedition, but usually run during the week following the end of term, or preceding the start of term.

Expeditions last about 1 week, but you do not have to attend for the whole week.

We usually go to ridge and wave sites, as we don't have those kinds of lift in Cambridge. Previous sites have included:
Costs
Total costs for an expedition may be £100–£200, but varies significantly depending on how much you fly, where the expedition is and choices you make regarding travel, food, and accommodation.

Flying costs vary from club to club, but are usually the same as or less than they are at Gransden Lodge. Some clubs charge a reciprocal membership fee of around £5 per day you fly.

Accommodation at gliding clubs is usually very affordable at around £15 per night, but varies from club to club, food is similarly affordable.
